Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia has recorded more than 90,000 new cases of coronavirus in the first half of the month in another confirmation that the country is currently in its worst period of the outbreak.

Newly cases have been spiking at unprecedented rate in major hotspots as daily death toll continues to hit three-digit figures for three consecutive weeks.

A further 6,120 cases were reported on Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 629,429. Of the total, 14.9 percent or 93,662 are active cases.

Southeast Asia's biggest country has been averaging 6,036 cases since the beginning of the month.

Midway through the month, East Java and South Sulawesi have added more cases than their total in the whole month of November.

West Java has become only the second province after Jakarta to average more than 1,000 in daily cases, while newly cases are also in upward trend in Central Java.

West Java has recorded 1,256 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily number among other provinces, to take its total to 68,066.

The province of 50 million has added more than 15,500 cases month to date, in comparison to the total of 16,179 cases it recorded during the whole month of November.

The total number of confirmed cases topped 155,000 in Jakarta after it registered another 1,117 in the day. The capital has added 18,200 cases since Dec. 1, more than any other provinces.

Central Java averages 824 cases this month to take its total to 68,260.

East Java has the smallest daily figure among the country's four most populous provinces but its total number of confirmed cases is second only to Jakarta, while it's also home to the biggest death toll in the Indonesian outbreak.

Furthermore, the average of daily cases in the province is more than double the figure recorded last month.

The seven-day average in East Java has set new record for the 17th day in a row.

Hit badly by the virus much earlier than many other provinces, East Java has recorded 71,369 cases since the outbreak began.

Death toll

An additional 155 people have died from coronavirus in the 24-hour period, bringing the total death toll to 19,111.

It's for the 24th day in a row that the daily death toll has topped 100, twice the length of the previous record in September.

The seven-day average of Covid-19 deaths is also in a record-breaking run for the last five days, with the latest standing at 159.

East Java reported another 49 deaths on Tuesday to take its total to 4,969.

Jakarta has the second-highest death toll with a total of 2,972 deaths, 22 more from the earlier day.

Central Java followed with a total of 2,674 coronavirus-related deaths, an increase of 23 on the figure the previous day.

West Java was the last province to have four-digit death toll, totaling 1,080.

Other hotspots

Newly cases are in steady decline in Riau and West Sumatra, but South Sulawesi and East Kalimantan continue to report a significant growth.

Several provinces like Banten and Central Kalimantan have emerged as new hotspots with daily cases topping 100.

South Sulawesi has added 2,900 cases in the last 15 days to take its total to 23,572, the fifth-biggest number after the four provinces in Java. To put into context, South Sulawesi recorded 2,312 cases during the whole month of November.

East Kalimantan has been averaging 216 cases month to date, the highest outside Java. It has outpaced Riau in the sixth place with a total of 22,862 cases.
