Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Newly coronavirus cases in West Java have been spreading at the speed matching that of worst-hit Jakarta since the beginning of the month while several other hotspots also see an upturn.

Indonesia recorded 6,388 new cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of positive cases to 611,631, according to the Health Ministry data.

The total number of active cases grows further to a new record of 91,602, or 15 percent of the overall confirmed cases.

The highest number of newly cases was 1,283 in West Java, followed by 992 cases in Central Java and 951 cases in Jakarta.

West Java has recorded a total of 65,355 cases since the outbreak started, after adding more than 12,800 cases month to date – averaging 1,070 cases. Last month, the country's most populous province averaged 539 cases.

It registered a new high of 1,648 cases nine days ago and has since reported four-digit daily numbers six times.

Jakarta meanwhile reported its lowest daily count in a month although it remains to have the biggest caseloads totaling 151,201 cases.

The capital has added more than 14,300 cases since the start of the month.

After reporting a national record of more than 2,000 cases late last month, Central Java is reporting a slower growth in newly cases but its daily total still averages more than 800 cases.

Central Java has a total of 65,600 cases.

East Java has recorded the smallest daily numbers among the four most populous provinces in the last three months, but its total amount of cases is second only to Jakarta as the province was hit badly by the virus much earlier.

It began to see an uptick in newly cases in late November and has since reported the highest seven-day average every single day in the last two weeks.

East Java has been averaging 604 cases since Dec. 1 to take its total to 69,130.

South Sulawesi is another province to struggle with a steady rise in infections in the last couple of weeks. Its daily average was within two digits for two straight months until it saw resurgence in newly cases in late November and has since recorded 100 or more cases per day.

It has been averaging 186 cases so far this month, close to its worst period of the pandemic back in September.

South Sulawesi is ranked fifth with a total of 22,887 cases.

East Kalimantan has seen a consistent growth in its monthly total of Covid cases since September and recorded a total of 22,126 cases as of Saturday.

The surge is slowing in other hotspots like Riau, West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Bali, whose total cases put them in the top ten of worst-affected provinces.

Banten in the western tip of Java Island is catching up faster and outpacing Bali and West and North Sumatra in daily numbers. A neighbor to Jakarta, Banten has now recorded a total 14,836 cases.

Death toll

For the 21st day in a row, Indonesia recorded more than 100 Covid deaths in a single day.

At least 18,653 people have died of coronavirus since the outbreak began, an increase of 142 on the previous day.

East Java again reported the highest daily death toll with a further 41 deaths to take its total to 4,832, more than any other provinces.

Jakarta has the second-highest death toll with a total of 2,917 coronavirus-related deaths, 17 more from a day earlier.

Central Java has added 25 more deaths in the 24-hour period for a total of 2,587.

The last province to have four-digit death toll is West Java, with a total of 1,052.
