Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia recorded the highest daily death toll in the coronavirus outbreak on Wednesday, when the country also extended the longest run of three-digit deaths for the 18th day in a row.

It recorded 171 coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 18,171. The previous record was 169 deaths reported on Nov. 27.

At least 1,226 people have died from the pneumonia-like disease since the start of the month.

East Java remains the deadliest place of the Indonesian outbreak, including Wednesday's highest of 38 deaths to take its total to 4,705 from a total of 66,187 confirmed cases.

Jakarta came next with a total of 2,864 Covid deaths, 18 more from the previous day. Meanwhile, Central Java added 37 deaths in the one-day period for a total of 2,513.

No other provinces have reported more than 1,000 Covid deaths since the oubreak started.

Worst weekly trend

Southeast Asia's biggest country has accumulated a total of 562,900 confirmed cases of the virus since the outbreak began, after adding 6,058 cases in the day.

The seven-day average has been setting a new high for the last three days. The highest daily number was 8,369 cases recorded last week.

The country has been averaging 6,199 cases in the past week, the highest since the outbreak.

The total number of active cases stands at 87,284, also a new record.

Newly cases in East Java are in a steady rise, with record-breaking seven-day average for the last 11 days.

The province registered 718 new cases in the day, its highest single-day rise since the outbreak. East Java's previous record was 641 cases registered on August 29.

Jakarta and West Java also saw their weekly average at the highest level so far.

Daily total in Jakarta has been reaching 1,000 or more cases in the last 27 days. The national capital averaged 1,250 cases in the last seven days, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 147,838 – more than any other provinces.

West Java added 908 new cases for a total of 62,083. The province of 50 million has been averaging 1,132 cases in the past week, second only to Jakarta.

The curve of seven-day average in Central Java has been plummeting in the past week, but it still added 735 new cases to take its total to 62,612.

South Sulawesi, which has the most Covid cases outside the top four in Java, is still battling resurgence in new transmissions, which have been reaching three digits in the last 11 days, including the province's record of 345 reported two days ago.

It registered another 157 cases on Wednesday to take its total to 22,183 cases.

Riau is ranked sixth with a total of 21,705 cases, followed by East Kalimantan (21,643), West Sumatra (21,300), North Sumatra (16,341) and Bali (15,070).

Banten has been emerging as new hotspot since late last month. It has added more than 1,200 cases since the beginning of the month to bring its total to 14,271.
