Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The surge in coronavirus cases continues in West Java where daily numbers have been reaching four digits for the last three days, putting them on a par with the newly caseloads in worst-hit Jakarta.

West Java has been averaging 1,132 cases in the first week of the month, taking its total number of confirmed cases to pass the 60,000 mark on Monday.

Jakarta, home to 25 percent of the nationwide cases, averaged 1,224 in the same period for a total of 145,427. It has recorded 1,466 new cases in the last 24 hours, its second-highest daily rise since the outbreak.

The dramatic surge in West Java began four days ago, when it reported a new high of 1,648 cases in a single day. By comparison, the country's most-populous province averaged just 539 cases throughout November.

Newly cases are also in a steady rise in East Java judged by its seven-day average that has been setting new records for nine consecutive days.

East Java, hit badly by the virus early on, saw resurgence late last month. It averaged 525 cases in the past week, more than double the figure three weeks ago.

It has a total of 65,557 cases, second only to Jakarta.

Central Java meanwhile saw a downward trend in new infections since it became the only province to report more than 2,000 cases in a single day last week.

It remains in the third place of provinces with the most cases, with a total of 61,108.

Overall, the country has recorded 5,754 cases in the 24-hour period, bringing the total number of cases to 581,550.

Its seven day-average passed the 6,000 mark for the first time since the outbreak started, underlining the ongoing surge that has put the country in its worst period of the pandemic.

The total number of active cases stands at 84,4814 to extend days or record-breaking numbers.

South Sulawesi and Banten also saw an uptick in newly cases.

South Sulawesi reported a new high of 345 cases in the day to take its total to 21,914, fewer only than the count in the top four provinces.

Coming next were Riau with a total of 21,302 cases, East Kalimantan (21,108), West Sumatra (21,087), North Sumatra (16,174) and Bali (14,845).

Banten has reported three-digit daily counts since November 19 and is getting closer to the group of ten worst-affected provinces. Its total number of cases surpassed 14,000 on Monday.

Death toll

The country has reported 127 more Covid deaths in the past 24 hours, the 16th day in a row that daily death toll has reached three digits.

The total number of coronavirus-related deaths stands at 17,867, or 3.1 percent of the overall cases.

East Java reported the highest death toll of the day with 34 to take the total death toll to 4,618, more than any other provinces.

Jakarta came second with a total of 2,825 deaths, 24 more from yesterday. Central Java has the third-biggest casualty toll of 2,470.

Apart from the three provinces, no other has reported more than 1,000 Covid deaths since the outbreak began.
