Seven-day average of newly Covid cases sets record for 9th day in a row

Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The surge in newly coronavirus cases has extended the run of record-breaking seven-day average for the ninth day in a row on Tuesday, after hitting the 5,000 mark for the first time since the outbreak two days ago.

Indonesia has been averaging 5,382 cases in the last seven days, bringing the total number of cases to 543,975, according to the Health Ministry data.

An additional 136 Covid patients have died in the last 24 hours to take the total death toll to 17,081, or 3.1 percent of overall cases. The weekly death toll also saw a new high for the third consecutive day, with an average of 139 deaths.

The total number of active cases stands at 72,015, a share of 13.2 percent in proportion to confirmed cases. Two weeks ago, the share was 12.8 percent on a smaller amount of cases.

Jakarta started the month with another 1,058 cases to bring its tally to 137,919, more than twice as many cases as in East Java – the second worst-affected province.

The last time Jakarta reported fewer than 1,000 cases was on November 12. The virus has killed 2,683 people in the capital city, the second-highest death toll in the Indonesian outbreak.

West Java added 878 cases for a total of 53,395. It was the highest daily rise in the province since July 9, when it reported over 900 cases in a single day.

The surge is slowing a bit in Central Java but it still added 730 more cases in the 24-hour period to take its total to 56,626. Central Java has seen the steepest rise in the last few weeks and became the only province so far to report more than 2,000 cases in single day, which was two days ago.

It has recorded 2,370 coronavirus-related deaths since the outbreak.

Newly cases are trending up in East Java, which has been averaging more than 400 cases in the last seven days. It added 430 cases on Tuesday for a total of 62,313.

East Java has the highest death toll nationwide, with a total of 4,438 Covid deaths.

South Sulawesi, the fifth province with the most cases, saw resurgence in cases with daily numbers hitting three digits in the last three days.

It registered 147 cases to take its total to 20,804. South Sulawesi has been averaging 103 cases in the last seven days, the first time since October 19 its seven-day average exceeded 100 cases.

Riau, Banten, East Kalimantan and Bali also reported three-digit figures in the day.

Riau is closing in on South Sulawesi with a total of 20,238 cases, 163 more from the previous day. The two provinces were separated by more than 3,500 cases a month ago but now the gap has been reduced to a few hundreds.

Banten registered 154 cases for a total of 13,215, moving closer to the group of ten worst-affected provinces.
