Indonesia daily covid deaths, confirmed cases hit new record

Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported the highest single-day rise of both coronavirus-related deaths and newly confirmed cases on Friday as the surge continued in line with improving testing capacity.

The country has recorded 5,828 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 522,581, according to the latest data from the Health Ministry. The previous high was 5,534 cases reported two days ago.

Its weekly average continued to set a new record for the fifth consecutive day, currently standing at 4,896 cases.

The death toll rose by 169 for a total of 16,521, also beating the previous daily record of 160 Covid deaths on September 22.

Indonesia now has a total of 68,604 active cases of the virus, or 13.1 percent of overall confirmed cases since the outbreak began.

Nearly 39,500 people have undergone diagnostic tests for coronavirus across the country in the 24-hour period as testing capacity increasing significantly in the last few weeks.

More provinces have met the World Health Organization requirement to test at least 1,000 people per 1 million population per week. According to the government data, at least 3.7 million people have undergone coronavirus testing since the outbreak began.

Major hotspots

Jakarta recorded 1,436 more cases, its second-highest daily rise so far, to take the capital city's total to 132,961, including 2,607 deaths.

Today's surge brings its seven-day average to a new high of 1,245 cases. Jakarta has added more than 27,300 cases since Nov. 1.

Central Java saw the second-highest rise of the day with another 963 cases, bringing its total number of cases to 51,843.

The figure puts the province in the third place of worst affected provinces. It also has the third-highest death toll, totaling 2,248 as of Friday, when it broke record in the number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day.

There were 51 deaths in the province in the last 24 hours.

Apart from Jakarta, Central Java is the only province to ever report four-digit daily numbers in the Indonesian outbreak.

West Java added 699 cases for a total of 51,181 cases. It has been averaging 550 cases since Nov. 1, the highest after that of Jakarta and Central Java.

East Java is ranked second with a total of 60,628 cases, but it has the highest death toll nationwide. The province has recorded a total of 4,314 Covid-19 deaths, 39 more from the previous day.

Second group

Riau in the central region of Sumatra Island reported the highest daily rise outside Java, with another 261 cases to take its total to 19,596.

Neighboring West Sumatra comes next with 239 cases for a total of 19,490 cases.

Banten registered its highest daily number of the month with 191 more cases. The province just south of Jakarta now has a total of 12,414 cases and is closing in faster on the group of ten worst-affected provinces.

East Kalimantan added 165 cases to take its total to 19,081.

South Sulawesi saw its daily count returning to three digits with 141 more cases. The province was hit badly by the virus and now has the biggest total number of confirmed cases after the four giants in Java, totaling 20,347 cases.

However, South Sulawesi averages just 74 cases throughout this month.
