Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported a new high in daily number of coronavirus cases on Friday amid a dramatic surge in Central and West Java.
The country has recorded 5,444 confirmed cases of the virus in the last 24 hours, taking its total to 457,735, according to the latest data from the Health Ministry.
It's for the first time since the outbreak began that daily number in the country has passed the 5,000 mark. The previous single-day record was 4,850 cases on October 8.
Newly cases in the country have been climbing faster in the last 10 days with the 7-day average exceeding 4,000 again – the level when the Indonesian outbreak reached its peak in late September.
A further 104 coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the day, bringing the total death toll to 15,037.
The total number of active cases stands at 57,064, a sharp increase from 55,274 only a day earlier.
New high in Central Java
Central Java is responsible for the new nationwide one-day high as it reported its own record of 1,362 cases in a day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 41,150.
It's only the second province after Jakarta to ever report a four-digit daily rise since the outbreak.
Central Java has beaten its own record three times since the beginning of the month. The previous high was 680 cases reported on Tuesday.
It also recorded the highest daily death toll with another 32 Covid-19 deaths, taking its total death toll to 1,950 – the third-highest among worst-affected provinces.
West Java registered 801 new cases, the highest one-day rise since Sept. 24, to take its total to 43,373 cases.Both Central and West Java have added more than 7,000 cases each since Nov. 1. Their seven-day average stands at over 600, in comparison to around 450 last week.
Jakarta reported 1,033 new cases, the fourth time this month its saw a four-digit daily count, to take its total to 116,207 – including 2,428 deaths.
Daily numbers are fluctuating in Jakarta with an average of 816 cases in the last three weeks.
East Java has reached a plateau in daily rise of coronavirus cases – its current seven-day average is only 248 cases, the smallest number in more than three months.
Outside the most-densely populated island of Java, East Kalimantan is the province with the biggest surge in newly cases.
It has been averaging more than 200 cases in the last three days.
The province is ranked seventh with a total of 16,661 cases, just below South Sulawesi (19,191) and West Sumatra (16,898).
The surge is slowing in West Sumatra but it still averages 177 cases per day.
Riau is the last province to report three-digit daily numbers but its seven-day average has fallen significantly to 128 from 220 in the end of October.
Other hotspots like South Sulawesi, Banten, North Sumatra, Bali and South Kalimantan are averaging 90 cases or fewer this month.
