Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia is facing an uptick in newly coronavirus cases with seven-day average climbing steadily in the last six days due to rising number of daily infections in Central and West Java after an earlier success in slowing down the surge.

The country registered 3,779 cases on Tuesday, taking its total to 444,348. The daily numbers have been highly fluctuating in the last two weeks but the current trend is moving upward.

The total number of active cases stands at 53,846 or 12.1 percent of the overall cases since the outbreak began.

An additional 72 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 14,761.

Central and West Java

While most of major hotspots have reported a decline in newly transmissions, Central and West Java continue to see a spike in daily total.

Central Java has beaten its own record in daily total twice this month, including a new high of 680 cases on Tuesday.

The province has a total of 39,019 cases, including 1,891 deaths. It's ranked fourth in the total number of confirmed cases and third in Covid-19 deaths.

Central Java's seven-day average currently stands at 564, in comparison to 380 last week.

West Java has added more than 4,800 cases since the beginning of the month, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 41,171 – the third-highest nationwide.

It recorded 748 new cases on Tuesday, its highest daily rise in almost three weeks.

For the third time this month, Jakarta reported a four-digit daily number amid a highly fluctuating trend.

The national capital has a total of 113,756 cases, an increase of 1,013 on its figure the previous day. A total of 2,390 people have died from coronavirus in Jakarta, home to 25 percent of overall confirmed cases in the country.

The daily total in East Java has been moving flat in the last 20 days, hovering between 200 and 300. It has recorded 272 new cases in the 24-hour period, taking its tally to 55,137 – second only to Jakarta.

The province reported another 20 Covid-19 deaths, the highest daily total of the day, to bring the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities to 3,933.

The four provinces in Java account for more than 50 percent of coronavirus cases nationwide.

The seven-day average in West Sumatra and neighboring Riau has been declining in the last two weeks, but East Kalimantan has seen an uptick in newly cases.

The three are the only provinces outside Java to average three digits in daily numbers.

South Sulawesi, Bali and North Sumatra, the other three provinces inside the top ten, are averaging between 60 and 80 cases per day.
