Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported the highest single-day rise of confirmed coronavirus cases on Thursday with 4,850 new cases to take the country's total to 320,564, as more provinces reported three-digit daily numbers. The previous record was 4,823 cases on Sept. 25.

The country also reported 108 more Covid-19 deaths, bringing the total death toll to 11,580. At least 840 Covid-19 patients have died in the last eight days.

The country has added more than 33,500 cases since the beginning of the month, averaging 4,195 cases.

Jakarta reported 1,182 cases to extend a run of four-digit daily numbers for ten consecutive days. The capital city has a total of 83,372 cases, including 1,834 deaths.

East Java is at a distant second with 46,095 cases, 347 more from yesterday. However, the province again reported the highest daily death toll, with 24 for a total of 3,374 deaths.

West Java has the second-highest daily caseloads after Jakarta with an average of 507 cases since the start of the month, taking its total to 26,259. But the fatality rate is relatively low with a total of 527 deaths or just 2 percent of the overall cases.

Central Java is also experiencing an uptick in newly cases, averaging 353 cases per day. It has recorded a total of 25,261 cases since the outbreak, including 1,472 deaths.

Apart from the big four, nine other provinces reported three-digit rise on Thursday, including West Papua that for the first time recorded more than 200 new infections in the 24-hour period.

South Sulawesi, which has the biggest number of cases after the top four provinces in Java, saw a new high of 213 cases to bring its total to 16,298.

Riau in the central part of Sumatra Island reported 244 new cases, taking its total to 9,226. It has been averaging 201 cases since Oct. 1, the highest after the big four.

East Kalimantan became the eighth province to pass the 10,000 mark, continuing an upward trend in newly cases that has begun since mid-August. It added 238 more cases on Thursday for a total of 10,203.

West Sumatra is another place when the virus is spreading fast, with an average of 193 cases month-to-date.

With a total of 7,824 cases, West Sumatra is ranked 11th among worst affected provinces but it's caseloads are growing at a bigger pace than that of Bali, North Sumatra, South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, reported 169 more cases for a total of 5,423.

Indonesia has nearly 65,000 active cases of the virus, or 20.3 percent of total cases. The number of cured or discharged patients stood at 244,060.
