Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Indonesia has set a new record in the last 24 hours, with 4,176 new cases to take the country's total to 248,852.

It's only for the second time since the outbreak that daily number of newly cases has exceeded 4,000. The country has added more than 74,000 new cases since the beginning of the month.

The death toll rose by 124 for a total of 9,677. It's the eighth day in a row that the country saw a three-digit daily death toll.

New cases are surging at the fastest speed this month, during which Indonesia has beaten its own record five times.

Jakarta, West Java and Central Java are experiencing the biggest growth in newly cases among worst-affected provinces while Riau and Aceh are seeing the most dramatic surge in cases with more than 100 percent rise month-to-date.

Jakarta reported 1,352 new cases, its second-highest one-day rise, to take its total to 63,318. The city's daily death toll was also the highest with 29 more Covid-19 deaths for a total of 1,570.

Newly cases are slowing a bit in East Java compared to last month, but its daily average remains the second-highest after Jakarta. East Java now has a total of 41,076 cases, 368 more from yesterday.

It reported 25 more coronavirus-related deaths – the first time in a month that its daily death toll was not the highest nationally – for a total of 2,990.

Central Java is at a distant third with 19,754 cases, including 1,272 deaths. The province averages 276 cases this month, in comparison to 143 in August.

The surge in West Java is alarming, with daily average passing 300 since Sept. 1 to outpace that of Central Java. Indonesia's most populous province added 680 cases on Monday, the highest single-day rise in more than two months, to take the province's total to 17,502.

South Sulawesi, the only province outside Java to join the top five, has seen a resurgence in cases this month with daily average hitting three-digits. It has recorded a total of 14,403 cases, including 400 deaths.

Second group

In the second group of worst-hit provinces, emerging hotspots Riau and Aceh have been enduring their worst period since the start of the month.

Newly cases in Riau have surged dramatically by 195 percent from their position on August 31, when it had a total of 1,846 cases. The province in the central region of Sumatra has accumulated 5,448 cases as of Monday.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, has reported a 126 percent rise in cases from 1,633 on August 31 to 3,694 on Monday.

Other hotspots like North Sumatra, Bali and East Kalimantan have been averaging between 126 and 129 cases since the beginning of the month, also indicating a significant surge from last month's growth.

Indonesia has a total of 58,378 active cases of the virus as of Monday, representing 23.5 percent of total cases.
