Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia added 2,037 cases on Sunday to continue a run of more than 2,000 cases per day for the fourth day in a row. Its overall cases stood at 153,535, including 6,680 deaths.
East Java and Jakarta have become the main driver of a spike in cases at the national level since early this month. While the capital city has the fastest-rising caseload, East Java continued to record the highest daily death toll of the outbreak.
Jakarta still has the fastest-rising caseload with 615 new cases in the day to take its total to 33,470, including 1,097 deaths. It has added more than 12,000 cases since the beginning of the month, in comparison to the 8,200 cases registered by East Java in the same period.
Earlier in the day, East Java became the second province after Jakarta to have reported more than 30,000 cases of coronavirus since the outbreak. It recorded 279 cases on Sunday, the lowest daily count in three weeks.
However, today's 19 coronavirus-related deaths again made East Java the leader in the daily death toll. A total of 2,172 Covid-19 patients have died in the province, nearly double the number of fatalities in Jakarta.
Neighboring Central Java is at a distant third with 12,476 cases of the virus, 188 more from a day earlier. It also has the third highest Covid-19 deaths of 846.
Only the three provinces reported a three-digit daily count.
South Sulawesi added just 33 cases for a total of 11,470. It has reported the smallest number of cases among the top five of most-affected provinces throughout this month.
West Java reported 68 new cases for a total of 9,283. Covid-19 cases have been surging in the country's biggest province, which has added 2,751 cases since the start of the month, only below those of Jakarta, East Java and Central Java.
The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients has jumped by 2,302 in the last 24 hours for a total of 107,500. It's for the fifth day in a row that recoveries exceeded 2,000 in day and for the third consecutive day they beat the daily cases.
