Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported a record 64 deaths from coronavirus-related disease on Monday, taking the total death toll to 2,198. The previous highest spike of Covid-19 deaths was 60 on April 14.

The country doesn't include probable cases of coronavirus in the death toll, although thousands of death persons across the archipelago have been buried under the Covid-19 procedure for safety reasons.

Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus also soared by 1,017, bringing the country's total to 39,294, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force. This is for the fifth time daily cases surpass the 1,000 mark, since the country hit that milestone last week.

The number of cured Covid-19 patients increased by 592 to a total of 15,123.

The country has conducted only around 8,700 specimen tests since Sunday, far below the daily testing capacity target of 20,000. It's also for the first time since May 27 the number of daily testing has fallen below 10,000.

East Java continues to report the biggest number of daily cases with 272 more on Monday to take the province's total to 8,063.

Jakarta retained its lead with 9,120 cases, 142 more from yesterday, but the gap between the two provinces has been constantly narrowing since mid-May.

East Java has the highest death toll of 616, in comparison to Jakarta's 557 Covid-19 deaths.

South Sulawesi remains the worst-hit province outside Java Island with 101 more cases to a total of 2,941 and ranks third nationwide.

Indonesia's biggest province, West Java, reported just 19 new cases. The province of more than 49 million people has only 2,623 cases overall.

Central Java registered a three-digit figure for the second day in a row and now has a total of 2,175 cases.
