Fikri Arigi, Jakarta – The 2020 simultaneous regional head election (Pilkada) is set to be amped up by candidates from President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) family.
The first of the president's immediate family announcing to run in the regional head elections was his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who will run for the Mayor of Solo. In doing so, Gibran is already enlisted as a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), which is also Jokowi's main political backer.
Endorsed by the Central Java PDIP, Gibran is currently enlisted as a Solo City Mayor candidate. The political party's branch in Solo, PDIP Solo, chose not to back Gibran as they had prepared their own candidate in the incumbent Achmad Purnomo.
The second in Jokowi's family entering politics is the president's son-in-law Bobby Nasution, who plans to run for North Sumatra's election as a candidate for the Mayor of Medan. The political backing he seeks comes from both PDIP and Golkar.
The third in line is Wahyu Purwanto, Jokowi's younger brother in law and Gunung Kidul University Rector, who expressed interest to run for the Gunung Kidul Regent election. He asserts that he is driven by his love for the area, especially after being a rector for 8 years.
Lastly, the uncle of Jokowi's son in law, Doli Sinomba Siregar, or the uncle of Bobby Nasution, is aiming to run as a candidate in North Sumatra's South Tapanuli Regent election. He is currently listed as a member of the Golkar Party.
