Telly Nathalia, Jakarta – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Sinabang in Aceh on Tuesday afternoon, causing light damage. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, did not issue a tsunami warning.

Earlier, the agency said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 but soon revised it to 6.1.

The epicenter of the earthquake was detected 24 kilometers southwest of Sinabang in Aceh's Simeulue district at a depth of 13 kilometers. It happened at around 1 p.m., according to the BMKG.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt in Simeulue, Meulaboh, Tapak Tuan and Singkil in Aceh and in Nias, Gunungsitoli and Medan in North Sumatra.

"In Simeulue, the earthquake caused light damage at two government facilities," Agus Wibowo, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said on Monday.

According to the BMKG, the earthquake was caused by the Indo-Australia plate shifting and hitting the Eurasia plate west of the island of Sumatra. One aftershock of a magnitude of 3.3 followed the main quake.
