Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The Jakarta Police arrested journalist and documentary filmmaker Dandhy Dwi Laksono on Thursday night and charged him with a crime over a tweet about the recent unrest in Papua.

After the interrogation, Dandhy was allowed to go home just before dawn.

Reports of his arrest came from the Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) who released a statement condemning the police action and demanding his immediate release.

According to AJI's statement, Dandhy arrived at his home in Pondok Gede, Bekasi, at around 10.30 p.m. Around 15 minutes later police came and banged on his door with an arrest warrant.

"Police arrested Dhandy because of his tweet on Papua that allegedly incited hatred and hostility among individuals and communities," the statement says.

In a tweet that went viral, Dandhy posted two photos depicting riot victims in Jayapura and Wamena, but it is not clear if it was that particular tweet that caused his arrest.

Dandhy, a senior AJI member, was taken to the Jakarta Police headquarters by four officers. He was charged under the Electronic Information and Transaction Law, AJI said.

"Dandhy's arrest is a violation of freedom of expression and freedom of speech, which are guaranteed by the Indonesian constitution," AJI said.

Dandhy's latest movie is "Sexy Killers," a documentary about how massive power plant projects take their toll on the environment and the poor.

In another development, police also arrested musician Ananda Badudu. "I was picked up by the police for transferring money to students," Ananda wrote a brief note on his Twitter account.

He also posted a photograph of him being interrogated at the police station while holding a document.
