Jakarta (Antara) – House of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah felt inclined to remind people that the National Armed Forces (TNI) newly formed Special Operations Command (Koopssus) does not act as law enforcers, but rather stay true to military's role as the nation's defense.

"The TNI should not be involved in law enforcement, because they are tasked for war," said Fahri a the Senayan Parliamentary Complex on Wednesday, July 31.

He further said that there needs to be a regulative basis to oversee a soldier's involvement in assisting the eradication of several types of legal violations.

Fahri argues that their tasks should not be based on the creativity of the TNI Commander or executive member, but a legal certainty.

"I heard there are many TNI high-ranking officials and former soldiers who are not too 'updated' on this issue," said Fahri Hamzah.

He mainly questions whether the formation of Koopssus is to relive the past when the military shared the task of preventing terrorism.

"It can go ahead as long as it doesn't violate any law, but we must tread carefully because TNI is not permitted to be involved in law enforcement," Fahri reminded again.
