A 44-year-old man named Sugeng Slamet from Lumajang, East Java, was violently assaulted in jail by other inmates, with police saying that they were repulsed by allegations that Sugeng had raped his own daughter.
According to the police, Sugeng currently has five wives, four of whom are domestic helpers working abroad. Since 2015, when his daughter was 16, Sugeng allegedly forced himself on her on at least 50 occasions.
On Monday, Sugeng booked a hotel room so that he could have sex with his daughter, but she managed to escape and report him to the police. He was apprehended and taken into police custody that same day.
Because of the disturbing allegations against him, police say the other inmates quickly turned on Sugeng.
"It was only [Tuesday evening] that he was put inside a cell in the Lumajang Police HQ, but by the morning he was already clobbered. The other prisoners assaulted him after finding out what he did," Lumajang Police Chief Muhammad Arsal Sahban said in a statement, as picked up by Vivanews yesterday.
Arsal added that officers conduct hourly checks of cells, so it's likely that Sugeng was assaulted between inspections.
"There are a variety of prisoners here, such as those who stole motorcycles, thieves, and even violent muggers. But none of them are as vile as Sugeng, who slept with his own daughter," Arsal said.
Sugeng, who reportedly sustained bruises all over his face and body following the assault, has been moved to solitary detention for his own protection.
The child abuse suspect has been charged with violating Indonesia's Child Protection Law. If convicted, he may face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to IDR5 billion (US$354,823).
