Prabowo and allies reported to police for causing post-election riots

Jakarta Globe - May 30, 2019

Telly Nathalia, Jakarta – A group of Reformasi activists reported Prabowo Subianto and some of his most prominent backers to police on Wednesday as those responsible for the riots in Jakarta on May 21-22.

Nine people are listed in the police report: Prabowo; Amien Rais, head of the honorary council of the National Mandate Party (PAN); Siti Hediati Hariyadi, alias Titiek Suharto – Prabowo's former wife and a daughter of Suharto, the country's second president; Bachtiar Nasir, former chairman of the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Council's Fatwa (GNPF-MUI); Haikal Hassan, a prominent Islamic teacher; Kivlan Zen, a retired Army general; Fadli Zon, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and a senior member of Prabowo's Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra); and Rizieq Shihab, leader of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

"We are here to officially file a police report against those we believe responsible, either as actors or funders, of the riots that occurred in front of the offices of Bawaslu [Election Supervisory Agency] and other parts of Jakarta on May 21-22," Benny Rhamdani, a representative of the group, said at the National Police headquarters on Wednesday.

The defeated presidential candidate left Indonesia for Dubai on Tuesday. His ultimate destination is not yet known.

Earlier in May, Dewi Tanjung, a politician of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), reported Amien, Bachtiar and Rizieq to police for treason after they allegedly called on Prabowo supporters to embark on mass action against the government.

Jakarta Police investigators have questioned Amien as a witness in the treason case against government critic Eggi Sudjana, a staunch supporter of Prabowo.

Bachtiar has fled to Saudi Arabia to evade questioning by police in a money-laundering investigation.

Rizieq is currently in Saudi Arabia, having fled to the kingdom to evade several police investigations against him at the time, one involving pornography.

Haikal, a spokesman for Prabowo's national campaign team during this year's presidential election, also fled to Saudi Arabia after was reported to police for hate speech and spreading false information on social media.

Kivlan is currently detained by the Jakarta Police in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate, among others, Chief Security Minster Wiranto, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) head Budi Gunawan and Gories Mere, a special staffer for intelligence and security in the office of the president.

Kivlan was also declared a suspect in a separate case of treason.

Fadli said he planned to file a police report against the group who reported him to the police.

The rioting occurred during a mass protest rally by Prabowo supporters against the result of the April 17 presidential election, which was won by the incumbent, Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
