Jakarta – The National Police have named former Army general Kivlan Zen a suspect in a treason case in relation to the "people power" rallies held after the elections.

"[He is] a suspect," National Police spokesperson Dedi Prasetyo confirmed on Monday night as quoted by kompas.com.

Kivlan was reported to the police for violating the Criminal Code articles on treason and spreading false news by a Serang resident named Jalaludin.

Kivlan, a former chief of the Army Strategic Reserves Command, and National Mandate Party (PAN) politician Eggi Sudjana initiated a rally demanding that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his running mate Ma'ruf Amin be disqualified from the presidential race on May 9.

The police dispersed the rally because it lacked a permit. Eggi has since been arrested and named a suspect, also on treason charges.

Kivlan's lawyer Pitra Ramdhoni said his client had told investigators that he had no intention to commit treason by holding the rally.

"We were only protesting and demonstrating against cheating [in the election]," he said. (kmt)
