Wiranto says KPU must be guarded from potential intervention

Egi Adyatama, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal, and Human Rights, Wiranto, held a closed meeting with a number of ministers in his office in Medan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, April 24. They discussed several incidents that were occurred after the 2019 general elections.

"We hold a coordinating meeting today to talk on things we have to do to maintain this peaceful election until the announcement of vote-counting result on May 22," said the coordinating minister when opening the meeting.

Based on Tempo's observation, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko and Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo attended the meeting. the retired Army General mentioned many incidents happened during the process of vote recapitulation carried out by Elections Committee (KPU).

Therefore, he asserted, they would continue to watch out the ballot-counting process as it was crucial, following many pros and cons over the quick count result and manual ballot counts claimed by the two candidate camps.

"We are preventing it from any intervention that possibly hinders the tasks of KPU officers both in regions and central," said Wiranto.

However, Wiranto said the establishment of the 2019 general elections has been running well thus far, not to mention the public must cast five ballots in this year's election. "We are grateful that previous issue about a riot, acts that may beset the security during the election did not occur," he remarked.
