Alfi Dinilhaq, Jakarta – Four Chinese automakers have broken into Indonesia's top 10 car sales rankings in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the growing presence of Chinese brands in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

According to retail sales data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), BYD ranked sixth with total sales of 10,265 units, capturing a 4.8% market share. The electric vehicle maker recorded steady monthly growth, with sales rising from 2,516 units in January to 3,596 in February and 4,153 in March.

Notably, BYD's March sales surpassed those of Honda, with 4,153 units compared with Honda's 4,080 units. However, Honda maintained a higher cumulative total for the quarter at 13,001 units.

Jaecoo, which focuses on SUVs, secured seventh place with 7,927 units sold and a 3.7% market share. Despite only officially entering the Indonesian market in November 2025, the brand has already overtaken established players such as Hyundai and Wuling.

In addition to its gasoline models, Jaecoo also offers an electric SUV, the J5 EV, which ranked among the top-selling electric vehicles in Indonesia last month.

Two other Chinese carmakers on the list are Wuling and Chery, ranking ninth and tenth, respectively.

The data underscores intensifying competition in Indonesia's automotive sector, with Chinese manufacturers gaining traction as consumers increasingly adopt electric vehicles and new market entrants challenge long-established brands.

At the top of the market, Japanese manufacturers continue to dominate. Toyota led with 64,416 units sold, accounting for a 30.4% market share, followed by Daihatsu with 34,653 units (16.4%), Suzuki with 19,026 units (9.0%), and Mitsubishi Motors with 18,469 units (8.7%).

Overall, Indonesia's retail car sales reached 211,905 units in the first quarter of 2026. Monthly sales totaled 67,029 units in January, rising to 78,239 units in February before easing to 66,637 units in March.
