Oyuk Ivani Siagian, Jakarta – Three people died when flooding struck Cilincing, North Jakarta. Cilincing Police Chief, Adjunct Commissioner Bobi Subasri, stated that all three likely died from electric shock.

"That is correct; [we have] three victims. At this stage of the investigation, it's due to electric shock," Bobi said when confirmed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

According to police reports, two of the victims were a married couple, identified by their initials HW and NJ, who resided in the Semper Barat neighborhood. The couple was reportedly attempting to clear flood debris and water from their home on Monday, January 12, 2026, when the accident occurred.

"The husband and wife died while cleaning the house, probably due to a short circuit, [leading to] electrocution and then passing," Bobi explained.

The third victim was identified as MYS, a resident of the Kalibaru area. Bobi noted that she was a housewife who was also suspected of having been electrocuted within the confines of her own home as floodwaters surged.

These incidents underscore the hidden dangers of electrical hazards during urban flooding, where compromised wiring can turn domestic spaces into high-risk environments within moments.

In the aftermath, the families of the deceased have formally declined requests for post-mortem examinations or full autopsies. Following standard police protocol, the bodies have been released to their respective relatives for burial.

"We offered to conduct autopsies and post-mortem examination, but the families refused, as they were already certain the deaths resulted from electric shock. The bodies have now been returned to the families," Bobi concluded.
