David Wilson, East Nusa Tenggara – The death toll from flash floods in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, has risen to five, while five others remain missing as search and rescue operations continue in Mauponggo District, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported Wednesday.
The floods, triggered by heavy rains on Sunday night, swept through Sawu Village and surrounding areas, destroying homes and cutting off access to 18 villages – Initially, three fatalities and four missing persons were reported, but BNPB confirmed that two more bodies were recovered as of Wednesday.
"BNPB, together with the Nagekeo Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and related agencies, continues to maximize search and rescue operations. The main challenges in the field are unpredictable weather and the large volume of mud and debris covering affected areas," BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari said in a statement.
On the ground, SAR teams deployed from the Ende Post, supported by naval personnel, have focused searches along riverbanks and the ruins of houses swept away by strong currents. "Our main priority is to find the missing victims as quickly as possible. All elements are involved," said Fathur Rahman, head of the Maumere SAR Office, earlier this week.
BNPB said at least 18 villages in Mauponggo remain isolated after roads, electricity, and communication lines were cut off. Clearing access routes is ongoing but is hampered by difficult terrain. For now, logistical aid is being delivered by sea with support from the provincial BPBD.
Initial aid includes 100 blankets, 100 mattresses, 75 hygiene kits, 50 cooking equipment sets, and 25 folding beds. Authorities also recommended additional ready-to-eat food supplies for survivors.
Mauponggo has become the main hub for displaced residents, with at least 30 people currently sheltering at an emergency post set up by BPBD Nagekeo. Urgent needs include tents, food, clothing, baby supplies, and the option of airlifting aid to remote villages still cut off.
Meanwhile, the emergency status declaration is pending as Nagekeo's regent coordinates with the East Nusa Tenggara governor in Kupang. BNPB said it is prepared to deploy more personnel to support local efforts and ensure affected communities receive essential assistance.
"We continue to coordinate with regional governments so that emergency response efforts can be carried out effectively. Our top priorities are locating missing victims, meeting survivors' basic needs, and reopening access to isolated areas," Abdul Muhari said.
