Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia's daily crude oil production has surpassed the government's official target for the first time in 17 years, marking a significant milestone in the country's effort to revive its oil industry, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced on Wednesday.

The state budget for 2025 set a national oil production target of 605,000 barrels per day (bpd). As of Wednesday morning, real-time monitoring showed production had reached 608,000 bpd, Bahlil said during the Energy and Mineral Festival in Jakarta, co-hosted by his ministry and B-Universe Media Holdings.

"It's not yet the cumulative annual figure, but we hope this momentum continues and that we can meet or even exceed the target outlined in the state budget," he added.

In the first half of the year, Indonesia's average oil output stood at around 578,000 bpd. However, production has shown a steady upward trend, crossing the 600,000 bpd threshold by the end of June.

"From 2008 to 2024, we never once met the oil production target set in the state budget," Bahlil said.

Under President Prabowo Subianto's administration, Indonesia has set an ambitious goal to raise national crude output to 1 million bpd by 2030 – a level not seen since the country's heyday as a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the 1980s.

To reach this target, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has launched several initiatives, including the reactivation of mature oil wells, easing investment requirements for both domestic and foreign firms, accelerating exploration of new reserves, and legalizing small-scale oil operations managed by local communities.

Despite the recent production gains, Indonesia remains heavily reliant on imports, with national oil consumption hovering around 1.6 million bpd.
