Hendrik Yaputra, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto stated that all political parties, whether in government or opposition, need to be open to public criticism. However, he rejected criticism from individuals who claim to represent the people but do not contribute to actual work.
According to Prabowo, these individuals are not qualified to offer meaningful correction, as they only speak without taking action, something he referred to as omon-omon, a twist on the Indonesian phrase omong-omong, which describes those who talk a lot but do little.
"We need correction, but not from those who present themselves as representatives of the people and then dictate. They don't sweat, don't bleed, yet they comment with nothing but omon-omon," Prabowo said in his speech at the 27th anniversary celebration of the National Awakening Party (PKB) in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
The former defense minister began his remarks by highlighting the importance of political parties upholding the principle of rahmatan lil alamin, which means promoting goodness and welfare for all.
He emphasized that unity and cooperation are essential to improving public welfare. While he accepts political competition during elections, Prabowo urged all parties to collaborate once the elections are over. The ultimate goal, he said, is to serve the people.
"After the contest, let's create harmony and cooperate, because the mission of political parties is to serve the people," he added.
Prabowo also said he respects parties' decisions to either join the government or remain outside of it. Regardless of their stance, he believes every party should be open to criticism from the public.
However, he reiterated that he does not welcome criticism from self-proclaimed representatives of the people who do not contribute to public service.
Prabowo attended the 27th PKB anniversary event in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, accompanied by senior Gerindra officials, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Puan Maharani, the Speaker of the House and a senior member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).
During his remarks, Prabowo said he felt at ease among members of PKB and the Nahdliyin community. He described Nahdlatul Ulama as a stabilizing force that has consistently helped guide Indonesia through difficult times.
Prabowo also praised NU and PKB for promoting moderate Islamic teachings that are peaceful and inclusive. He concluded his speech by thanking PKB for the invitation to attend its 27th anniversary celebration.
