Vedro Imanuel Girsang, Jakarta – A total of 93 individuals were arrested by the police during a demonstration commemorating the 27th anniversary of the reformation in front of Jakarta City Hall.
Amnesty Indonesia Director Usman Hamid said that all of those arrested were Trisakti University students.
"They are all Trisakti students," said Usman at the Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters on Thursday, May 22, 2025. One of them is the president of the Trisakti Student Council, Faiz Nabawi.
Jakarta Metro Police Public Relations Chief, Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, also confirmed the incident. However, he explained that the police were conducting a security operation rather than making arrests.
"We confirm the security operation yesterday," Ade said in a press conference the same day.
Ade stated that the demonstrators broke through the security barricades and forced their way into Jakarta City Hall.
"The location was prepared in front of the entrance, but they forced their way through the exit," he said.
He added that some of the students pushed, hit, and kicked officers during the incident.
"As a result, seven police members were injured," said Ade.
All 93 students remain in custody at the Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters and are still being questioned by investigators.
"Until now, they are still being held at the Police Headquarters," Ade said.
The group of students from Trisakti was known to be holding a demonstration to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the reformation, which fell on May 21.
They had several demands, one of which was to declare the 4 Trisakti students who were shot during the Trisakti Tragedy, Elang Mulia Lesmana, Heri Hertanto, Hafidin Royan, and Hendriawan Sie, as national heroes.
