Antara, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto is working towards increasing research funding for higher education institutions in Indonesia to 1 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). This is expected to help drive national economic and industrial growth.

This information was shared by Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, following a meeting and discussion between the President, university rectors, and leaders of state and private higher education institutions in Jakarta.

"The President definitely wants to improve the well-being of lecturers, and that includes increasing research funds," Brian stated during a press briefing at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 13, 2025, as reported by Antara.

Brian explained that the President hopes to see a rise in research funding in Indonesia. He pointed to South Korea, which allocates up to 4 percent of its GDP to research, as a successful example.

Brian noted that research funding in Indonesia for 2024 was estimated to be around 0.3 percent of the GDP. He also acknowledged that achieving the 1 percent goal will require time and sustained effort.

"Later, as our development progresses rapidly, and technology-based industrialization also accelerates, the President hopes that we can increase funding to at least 1 percent of our GDP," he said.

During his presentation at the meeting with the rectors, Brian reiterated the government's commitment to making universities the primary centers for research and innovation in order to build a strong and independent national industry.

Brian further added that the government, through the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, is allocating Rp2 trillion for research from the state budget, the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP), and collaborations with industry partners.
