Dani Aswara, Antara, Jakarta – Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto said his ministry noted that Christmas remissions and sentence reductions given to a total of 15,976 inmates could result in state budget savings of Rp 8.19 billion.

"The budget was previously allocated for food for the inmates and children in conflict with the law," Agus said in an official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, December 25.

He explained that as of December 16, the number of inmates and children in conflict with the law in Indonesia reached 274,166, of which 19,968 were Christians.

For the 2024 Christmas, the government granted remissions for 15,807 inmates, comprising 15,691 inmates who received sentence reductions and 116 inmates declared free immediately.

As for juveniles in conflict with the law, 166 children received sentence reductions, and three were declared free immediately.

Andrianto elaborated that the remissions were granted as a reward for inmates and children in conflict with the law who have shown good behavior, complied with rules, actively participated in correctional programs, and demonstrated reduced risks.

He further said the reward was given to stimulate their reintegration into society.

The minister also encouraged the inmates and children in conflict with the law to stay productive and keep improving themselves.

"I hope the correctional programs that you have received can build your capacity as a human who has potential so that your return to the community can be beneficial," he stated.
