Hammam Izzuddin, Anwar Siswadi, Jakarta – The West Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the 4.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Bandung Regency, Garut, and surrounding areas on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, resulted in losses totaling Rp385,017,956,250. The damage primarily affected hundreds of residential homes and dozens of public facilities.
As of Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 8:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), the data revealed that Bandung Regency suffered the most significant damage, with 532 buildings severely impacted. Additionally, 8 health facilities, 31 educational units, and 55 houses of worship were reported to have been damaged.
While Garut Regency did not experience any severely damaged buildings, the number of affected structures reached 1,195.
The West Java BPBD explained that the sudden seismic event impacted a total of 21,709 people in Bandung, West Bandung, Purwakarta, and Bogor. Of these, 710 were displaced, 83 were injured, and tragically, one person died.
The earthquake, which occurred at 9:41 WIB, had its epicenter on land and was triggered by the activity of the South Garut Fault or Garsela Fault.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) noted that three more quakes were felt in Bandung and Garut Regencies following the initial 4.9-magnitude earthquake. These aftershocks measured 3.2, 3.5, and 3.1 magnitudes, occurring at 9:48, 12:27, and 14:56 WIB, respectively. The epicenters of these quakes remained in the same region as the original quake, 24 kilometers southeast of Bandung Regency.
