Antara, Jakarta – The Observation Post of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Wulanggitang District, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), reports an eruption with an ash column ejected 700 to 900 meters high on Thursday morning, September 12, 2024.
"The eruption occurred from 00:00 a.m. to 06:00 a.m. local time," said the Observation Post Officer, Dany Erlangga Yosa Putra, as reported by Antara on Thursday.
During that period, Dany said, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted thrice, ejecting thick and grey ash columns reaching 700 to 900 meters high above the crater.
The eruptions emit lava that flows northeast at around 4.3 kilometers away from the center of the eruption. The eruptions, Dany reported, were recorded with an amplitude of 2.96 to 7.4 millimeters with a duration of 316 to 478 seconds. Meanwhile, deep volcanic earthquakes occurred 10 times with an amplitude of 2.22 to 6.66 millimeters, while distant tectonic earthquakes were recorded five times.
Due to the high intensity of the eruptions, the volcanic activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki stays at alert Level III. Thus, his side advises residents living near the mountain and visitors to avoid 3 kilometers from the center of eruptions.
The advise covers Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, 4 kilometers of the Nort-East sector, and 5 kilometers of the Northeast sector from the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki. "Stay calm and follow local government's instructions and don't trust news from unconfirmed sources," Dany said.
