Ilham Oktafian, Stefani Wijaya, Jakarta – Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo is planning to report an alleged misuse of funds dedicated to run the 2024 National Sports Week (PON).

Indonesia recently kicked off the quadrennial sports event that brought together almost 13,000 athletes from all over the country. For the first time in history, PON is taking place in two provinces, namely Aceh and North Sumatra. Dito's announcement for a police report came not long after PON athletes complained on social media that the venues and facilities were far from ready. Photos of athletes having to cross muddy paths on a wooden board had also gone viral.

Dito said he planned on filing the funds misuse report to the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department and the Attorney General's Office.

"Because those two bodies are the task force tasked to monitor PON," Dito said on Wednesday.

The minister, however, did not get into more details on the report. "But in principle, we hope that this will be a successful PON," Dito said.

PON, which officially started earlier this month, will go on until September 20. The athletes will be competing in 65 sports.
