Daniel A. Fajri, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stressed that climate issues need to be a shared concern. He highlighted the mining sector as one of the primary causes of environmental damage. If environmental protection is neglected, it will have the most impact on life quality, leading to issues such as disease, drought, and food shortages.

"Sectors that exert immense pressure are the energy and mining sectors. If the forestry and energy sectors are mismanaged, it will be detrimental to us," the President said after attending the environmental festival dubbed LIKE Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center on Friday, August 9, 2024.

He reiterated that nurseries, environmental restoration, and forest rehabilitation are mandatory for all mining operations. "This must be prioritized by the Forestry Ministry," he said.

On the same occasion, the former governor of Jakarta lauded the community groups for combating climate change. He acknowledged that the government could not do it alone.

Jokowi recently passed Presidential Regulation No. 77 of 2024 on August 5, 2024, to expedite the establishment of nursery facilities in mineral and coal mining. The regulation outlines mining businesses mandated to build and manage nurseries.

The government has set a deadline of December 31, 2025, for completing these nursery facilities. Businesses that fail to comply will face strict penalties.
