Wijayanti Putri, Solo – Solo Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka tendered his resignation letter to the municipal legislature on Tuesday as he prepares for a bigger role as the elected vice president.
Gibran, 36, the eldest son of President Joko Widodo, and President-Elect Prabowo Subianto will be sworn in as the country's leaders on October 20.
Vice Mayor Teguh Prakosa said Gibran's resignation had been discussed earlier. They also share a commitment to continuing the implementation of development grants from foreign countries such as the United Arab Emirates after the mayor resigns.
"Brother Gibran has informed me about his resignation plan and asked me to ensure that the funds – including those already disbursed and future grants – are allocated to the intended programs," Teguh said.
He added that Gibran had also asked him to maintain the policies outlined in the city budget and the mid-term development planning.
"We have frequently discussed these issues. The main objective is to keep the city government running smoothly," Teguh said.
