Jakarta – Indonesia recently signed a partnership agreement with Bezos Earth Fund, the philanthropic commitment by the American business magnate Jeff Bezos to fight climate change.

According to the Forestry Ministry, the freshly signed agreement will see Bezos Earth Fund helping Indonesia reach its carbon emission reductions under the nationally determined contribution (NDC). The partnership also revolves around Indonesia's goal to achieve the FOLU (forestry and other land use) net sink program by 2030.

The signing took place at the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum on Tuesday local time. Signing the MoU were Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya and Bezos Earth Fund's senior fellow Zac Goldsmith.

"This [partnership] is intended to support the multi-stakeholder efforts from the private and philanthropic sectors, as well as the welfare of local and indigenous communities. I am very confident that this new partnership will be very productive in the years to come," Siti was quoted as saying in a press statement on Wednesday.

The recently announced partnership is based on mutual recognition and commitment to six areas, according to Siti.

The first area is recognizing Indonesia's target to achieve net carbon absorption from the FOLU sectors by 2030 in line with international pacts such as the Paris Agreement and the Biological Diversity Convention.

The second scope of work revolves around the commitment to expanding social forestry targets, including legal recognition of customary forests, aimed at biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management practices.

Third is Indonesia's initiative to manage existing conservation areas, while also building new national parks to maintain ecological diversity. Indonesia also seeks innovative partnerships related to the conservation of logging concessions through what they call innovative permits and revised business plans.

Fifth is the facilitation of policy dialogues aimed at aligning Indonesia's methodologies with global standards. Last but not least is driving multi-sectoral engagement.

"This partnership underscores a commitment to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. It leverages expertise and resources to achieve a transformative impact on Indonesia's environmental landscape," Siti said.
