Digital economy sector contributes Rp 25t in tax revenues since 2020

Monique Handa Shafira, Jakarta – The digital economy sector has contributed Rp 25 trillion ($1.5 billion) to government tax revenues in the past four years and five months, according to data from the Taxation Directorate.

The amount comprises Rp 20.15 trillion from e-commerce, Rp 746.16 billion from crypto tax, Rp 2.11 trillion from the P2P lending business and Rp 1.99 trillion in tax from goods and services procurement via the government's electronic procurement platform.

Taxation Directorate spokesperson Dwi Astuti said the government has identified 172 e-commerce companies liable to value-added tax and their collective payment has steadily increased.

Their paid taxes amounted to Rp 731.4 billion in 2020, Rp 3.90 trillion in 2021, Rp 5.51 trillion in 2022, Rp 6.76 trillion in 2023, and Rp 3.25 trillion between January and May 2024, she said.

Crypto tax collections began in 2022 with a fluctuating trend, from initially Rp 246.45 billion to Rp 220.83 billion in 2023, and reached Rp 278.88 billion in the first five months of 2024.

The fintech tax, which mainly targets P2P lenders, was also introduced in 2022, generating Rp 446.39 billion in the first year, Rp 1.11 trillion in 2023, and Rp 549.47 billion in the January-May period of 2024.
