Irsyan Hasyim (Contributor), Jakarta – Flooding occurred in Taliabu Island Regency, North Maluku Province, following heavy rains on May 16 at 02:00 local time. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that more than 600 people or 155 families were affected by the disaster as of Monday, May 27.

Abdul Muhari, the head of the agency's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, said there had been no casualties thus far. "The water level was about 50 centimeters, submerging two villages, namely Talo Village and Wayo Village. Both are located in West Taliabu District, Taliabu Island Regency," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, May 27.

According to him, data from the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) showed that the water channel connecting Jalan Talo Village and Wayo Village was cut off, the bridge connecting Ratahaya Hospital and Bobong Village could not be passed by vehicles, and a bridge connecting Bobong Hamlet and Fangahu Hamlet was slightly damaged. "These conditions are hindering the movement of vehicles," Muhari added.

The Taliabu Island Regency BPBD, along with the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police, (Polri) have been conducting community service to build emergency roads. "The BNPB appeals to the local government and the people of Taliabu Island Regency to always be alert to the possibility of further flooding," said Muhari.
