Jokowi wants Indonesia palace made by its people, not as a colonial remnant

Tempo - March 1, 2024

Antara, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that the construction of the presidential palace in the new capital of Nusantara (IKN) was initiated to ensure that the country would have a presidential building that was not a remnant of colonialism.

"Indeed, we aspire to have a presidential building (Palace) that is not a colonial relic. One that is built by ourselves with our own products, done by our own nation's children, and thus fostering pride and respect," the president said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS) building in IKN, East Kalimantan on Friday, March 1.

Jokowi recalled about the times when he welcomed leaders from other countries at the Jakarta Palace, who praised the palace's beauty. However, he was unable to comment on the building's architecture since it was a legacy from the Dutch colonial era. "It is the same with the palace in Bogor, Yogya, and Cipanas," he explained.

The President emphasized that the new palace at IKN would enhance the pride of the people in their abilities and accomplishments.

He also invited people visiting the new capital to observe the ongoing transformation of IKN development from the highest point, such as from the Presidential Palace Building at IKN.

"I don't know if it's allowed or not, but if it is, I think everyone should take a look from there," Jokowi said.
