Apriadi Gunawan, Medan – The Medan District Court on Thursday sentenced Aditya Hasibuan, the son of a recently dishonorably discharged police officer, to 18 months in prison on charges of assaulting a university student.

Presiding judge Nelson Panjaitan said the defendant was found guilty of violating Article 351 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, and also criminal damage to property under Article 406 with a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.

The judge also ordered the defendant to pay Rp 52.3 million (US$3,428) in fines, which could be substituted by an additional two months in prison.

The sentence was in line with the state prosecutor's demand. Both the defendant and the prosecutor said they would consider whether to appeal the verdict.

Aditya was found to have assaulted 19-year-old university student Ken Admiral on Dec. 21, 2022, and damaged his car. The next day, the victim went to Aditya's house in Medan to demand compensation but Aditya allegedly assaulted him in front of his father, Achiruddin Hasibuan.

Instead of intervening, Achiruddin did nothing to prevent the assault and ordered his subordinate to point a weapon at Ken.

In May, Achiruddin was dishonorably discharged for failing to intervene in the alleged assault. He held a middle officer rank of Adj. Sr. Comr. and was chief of operations at the provincial police narcotics division prior to his discharge.

In June, the North Sumatra Police named Achiruddin a suspect for allegedly accepting protection money from an illegal fuel distributor. Achiruddin allegedly received Rp 7.5 million (US$503) each month from PT Almira Nusa Raya, which operated an unlicensed fuel warehouse. Two people from the company have also been named suspects.

The police are also looking into money laundering allegations against the disgraced police officer. (dre)
