Electronic waste management in Jakarta, first in Indonesia

Antara, Jakarta – Jakarta Environment Office has distributed free electronic waste management services to Jakarta residents. The Head of the Jakarta Environment Office Asep Kuswanto said that electronic waste is a specific waste that needs to be managed correctly. Asep also said that the regulation and its derivatives for electronic waste are currently only governed in Jakarta.

"There are no regulations in other regions, We hope they will take this measure too," said Asep in Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, as quoted by Antara.

The Provincial Government of Jakarta has seriously managed specific waste issues, including electronic waste, since 2017. "We offer a free electronic waste pick-up service since 2017," said Asep.

The Director of Waste, Hazardous, and Toxic Materials Management of the Jakarta Environmental Office Yusiono A. Supalal said that the volume of electronic waste in Jakarta reached 75.63 tons/day in 2021. It is projected to increase by 20% in 2045 to 90.23 tons/day. "Thus, electronic waste has to be managed correctly," said Yusiono in a written statement.

To manage electronic waste free of charge, The Environment Office works in partnership with PT Citra Asia Raya (CAR). The company is said to have a full permit and is experienced in managing electronic waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

In the agreement, PT CAR will gather, transfer, and utilize the waste and socialize, educate, supervise, and evaluate the waste management system. The Managing Director of PT CAR, Irwan appreciated the Jakarta Environment Office for their trust to let PT CAR manages the electronic waste free of charge for Jakarta residents.
