Antara, Jakarta – SOE Minister Erick Thohir said his department seeks to fast-track the transition to electric vehicles in Indonesia to help achieve a more eco-friendly transportation sector. He said that Indonesia has the mineral reserves needed as EV raw materials. Through SOE partnerships, he is confident Indonesia can take a major role in the EV industry.

"The switch to electricity-run transportation will certainly increase national energy security. Additionally, the effort will support the future of transportation, one that is far cheaper and environmentally friendly," he said as Antara reported.

SOEs have been taking a number of steps to educate and invite members of the public to switch to electric vehicles. One of them is the presence of SOEs at the Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) 2023 exhibition to introduce electric vehicle batteries produced by Indonesia Batery Corporation (IBC), which are claimed to be one of the best quality domestic products at competitive prices.

"Through the PEVS 2023 exhibition, we directly greet the public to convince them that Indonesia is ready to switch to electric vehicles. Here at SOEs we work together to form an ecosystem from upstream to downstream," said Erick said.

State power company PLN also supports the acceleration to establish an electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia, one way is by providing public electric vehicle charging station facilities (SPKLU) in a number of locations. PLN and Pertamina also ensure convenience for electric vehicle users by building charging infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the government has started to roll-out incentives for electric vehicles in March. People can now get a Rp7 million subsidy for purchasing electric motorbikes, and a 10-percent VAT discount for electric cars.
