Bali police arrest Frenchman for mini-mart robbery

Ni Komang Erviani, South Kuta, Bali – Local police announced they had arrested of a French national on suspicion of robbing a convenience store in South Kuta, Badung regency, Bali, in January.

Denpasar Police chief Bambang Yugo Pamungkas told journalists on Tuesday that Jacob Roger Marcel allegedly stole around Rp 35.38 million (US$2,300) in cash from the Puja Mandala Alfamart on Jl. Kuru Setra, along with a carton of cigarettes and two bottled soft drinks.

"The suspect has admitted his act to the police, saying that he had run out of money," Yugo said.

The incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 23.

According to a statement from the suspect, Marcel entered the store before it had closed and hid inside. After the store closed, he pried open the cash box to steal the money and also took the cigarettes and soft drinks. He then escaped through the ceiling in the store's toilet.

He was arrested later that same day.

"We arrested him [in possession of] a bag containing the cash, cigarettes, bottled soft drinks and a small crowbar," the police chief said.

Marcel faces a maximum 7 years in prison if he is convicted for the crime. (dre)
