Antara, Jakarta – Darmaningtyas, an observer from the Institute for Transportation Studies (INSTRAN), asked Jakarta-owned bus operator TransJakarta to add a special fleet for women in its mikrotrans or angkot services in a bid to reduce the risk of sexual harassment cases.

"I propose that TransJakarta add special fleets for women. It's not available yet in mikrotrans," said Darmaningtyas, as quoted from Antara, Sunday, February 26.

He explained that special fleets for women would provide a sense of comfort and security to the community. He referred to a 2008 survey which revealed that 83 percent of 800 respondents, who were mostly women, agreed to the separation of the public transport service.

"Because it gives a sense of comfort," said Darmaningtyas.

Even if there is no female-only fleet, he suggested, TransJakarta could adjust the seating position on mikrotrans as they do on their large buses. For instance, the front side of the bus is reserved for females, while the rest is for males and females.

As for mikrotrans, Darmaningtyas opined that it could be done by separating the side of the seat; the left side for males and the right side for females.
