Mutia Yuantisya, Jakarta – Acting Jakarta governor Heru Budi Hartono on Tuesday said the city administration is attempting to further overcome urban flooding, one of which is by continuing the construction of the Giant Sea Wall across the city's Northern coastline.

"As I have explained, there are 22.5 kilometers, of which 11 kilometers of it is under the provincial government authority. The local government in 2022 has constructed the 0.5 kilometers and had grown to 1.59 kilometers," said the governor at the BNPB headquarters on December 27.

The giant sea wall is expected to be completed in 2027. "In terms of leaks, there are no leaks, but there are sections that have not been embanked," he said while pledging to continue the wall's construction.

Prior to his statement, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had officially requested Heru Budi to complete multiple projects such as the "normalization" of 13 rivers that stretch through the city, completing the Ciliwung sodetan (a channel to drain water into another channel) that connects to the west flood canal (BKT), flood pump management, and the completion of the Giant Sea Wall.

"Whoever the governor of Jakarta is, they must consistently complete [the flood prevention projects]. Here, there are the Jakarta and West Java governors. I ask them to complete the projects consistently," said Jokowi in a written statement on December 23.
