M Rosseno Aji, Jakarta – Hundreds of online motorcycle taxi or online ojek drivers responded to the government's plan to hike the prices of subsidized fuel – Pertalite and Biosolar – by staging a protest in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) Building, Jakarta. They objected to the price increase as it will burden their economy.

"[If the price of] fuel goes up, [all prices] go up!" said the orator today, August 29, 2022.

The orator shouted that drivers would further suffer with the price hike. Moreover, it is not followed by an increase in motorcycle taxi fares. Drivers also demanded better regulations related to the partnerships between drivers and ride-hailing app companies.

To date, there is no legal umbrella for online ojek drivers. Consequently, drivers' rights are often not fulfilled and they can be easily dismissed as driver-partners. "We demand our rights that have not been granted yet," the orator underlined.

The government planned to raise the price of Pertalite and Solar in the near future after the budget for energy subsidies and compensation swells to Rp502 trillion.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said the government is unlikely to maintain the subsidy amount. Besides, he argued that fuel prices in Indonesia are the cheapest in the world.

The price hike is still being calculated and will be announced at the end of August or early September 2022. Tempo received information that the price will increase between Rp2,000 to Rp3,000 per liter from the current price of Pertalite at Rp7,650 per liter and Biosolar at Rp5,150 per liter.
