Antara, Jakarta – As transportation accounts for 47 percent of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions recorded in the province, the government has decided to impose several vehicle restrictions, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has informed.
"Vehicle restrictions can concretely contribute to support climate change mitigation attempts," he said, according to a statement read by Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria, during a plenary meeting with the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) on Tuesday.
Vehicle restriction policies will encourage the community to shift from private vehicles to public transportation, Baswedan added.
Thus, the Jakarta provincial government has drawn up a Regional Regulation Draft on the Transportation Master Plan and a Regional Regulation Draft on Electronic Traffic Control.
The two drafts have been presented to the legislative body for discussion and approval, along with the Regional Regulation Draft on Regional Financial Management.
According to the government, the two transportation regulation drafts are expected to become a guideline for continuing the development of the transportation sector in Jakarta.
"(We will) create an inclusive transportation to (realize) a climate-resilient city development," he stated.
Earlier, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police's Traffic Corps and Jakarta Transportation Office had agreed to expand the odd-even traffic rule coverage from 13 to 26 roads in Jakarta by June 6, 2022.
The traffic restriction will be enforced from 6-10 a.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB, UTC+7) and 4-9 p.m. WIB on weekdays. Meanwhile, no traffic restrictions will be applied on the weekends and public holidays.
In addition, the provincial government is carrying out a traffic engineering trial around the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout from July 4-10.
Earlier, Swiss air quality technology company IQAir had ranked Jakarta as the most polluted city in the world with an air quality index of 193 on the morning of June 20, 2022.
Currently, Jakarta is ranked eighth with an air quality index of 102, as per information obtained from the company's website on Tuesday.
