M Julnis Firmansyah, Jakarta – The President of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Ahmad Syaikhu, said Indonesia had been sliding toward authoritarianism in the past ten years. He made the statement during the party's national leadership meeting at Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Central Jakarta today, June 20, 2022.

"For almost a decade, our democracy has been stuck, and even retreated backward, and turned from the democracy era to the authoritarianism era," said Syaikhu in his speech before hundreds of PKS cadres.

He also said there is currently a distrust society phenomenon in the community. Consequently, people do not trust each other, and division in society existed.

"There has been a sharp and protracted social division. But our nation is able to survive and will rise from adversity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic," Syaikhu added.

Given the occurrence of authoritarianism and distrust in society, Syaikhu encouraged his cadres to work harder to win the 2024 General Elections.

According to him, the upcoming election is not only momentum for changing leaders, but also a change in the direction of development of Indonesia in the future.
