Muhammad Hendartyo, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Pandjaitan said in a virtual press conference on Thursday, February 10, 2022, that energy transition will be costly, especially for a developing country such as Indonesia.
The energy transition, Luhut says, requires emissions to be dropped and the government to impose an equitable energy transition.
"Surely there are many developing and poor countries that are unable and do not want to burden their own people, especially amidst the current pandemic which is already a difficult situation itself," said Luhut during the event.
"We want it to be fair, those that are heavily burdened must be assisted, those that are ready can continue independently while also helping those that are unable to," Luhut added.
Luhut argued that such a transition must have minimal effect on the people's socio-economic condition. He added that a change in point of view will also trigger changes in employment, development, business orientation, and other similar aspects.
Luhut believed that Indonesia and other developing countries must be backed by strong global cooperation, which he expects will be established in the Indonesia G20 presidency.
Luhut mentioned that the G20 energy transition forum under Indonesia's presidency will raise crucial aspects in the energy transition such as energy access, technology, and funding.
