At least one dies in Jayapura flooding: BNPB

Tempo.Co, Jakarta – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced flooding struck the city of Jayapura in Papua on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 10:00 p.m. local time.

BNPB Head of Data, Information and Communications Center Abdul Muhari said an evacuation team comprising joint personnel from the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the military and the police together with several other state agencies were still on the field to monitor flooding developments. Preliminary reports suggested at least one person died in the disaster.

"Based on our observation, the flooding still persisted at the depth of 150-200 cm. The floodwater at Youtefa Market even reached 300 cm," Muhari said in a written statement on Friday, January 7, 2022.

BPBD Jayapura has also readied three rubber boats and a truck to evacuate affected residents – some have already been transported to safety.

Besides inundating homes, he went on, the flood also devastated several public facilities, including Aryoko Hospital and the Governor's Office.

"Blackouts also occurred in the affected areas," he added.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for Jayapura city, saying heavy downpours and strong winds were likely to hit Jayapura city for the next few days.
