EU council adds Indonesia to its free travel list

Indonesia is now included on a free travel list established by the European Union, after the bloc's council updated their recommendations on COVID-related border restrictions on Thursday.

Under the new rules, which are valid as of yesterday, the council recommended EU member states to gradually lift travel restrictions at external borders for residents from dozens of countries, including Indonesia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Australia.

It should be noted that the recommendation is not a legally binding instrument, as each government within the bloc is still responsible for the implementation of the travel recommendations. The list is currently updated every two weeks, following travel restrictions imposed by the EU last March to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

With the pandemic appearing to be more manageable in Indonesia and at the global level, Indonesians are able to visit more countries as travel restrictions are gradually lifted. Earlier this month, Singapore announced that it will start a unilateral vaccinated travel lane (VTL) on Nov. 29, which targets fully-vaccinated individuals who must present a negative result from a PCR test.
