Jokowi's spokesman on 57 KPK employees' dismissal: KPK's authority

Tempo - September 15, 2021

Dewi Nurita, Rosseno Aji, Jakarta – Spokesman of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, Fadjroel Rachman, said all matters related to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), including the appointment and dismissal of employees, are under the authority of the anti-graft agency.

Fadjroel responded to the issue that the KPK would dismiss 57 employees who did not pass the civic knowledge test or TWK.

"KPK is an independent institution so that all matters related to the KPK are under its authority. Please interview the spokesman or commissioner of the KPK," said Fadjroel via text message on Wednesday, September 15.

A Tempo's source said a decree regarding the dismissal of the employees had been signed on October 1, 2021. The date of dismissal was earlier than the prediction which was on October 31 or November 1, 2021. The prediction was based on the mandate of Law No. 19 of 2019, noting that the transfer of employee status into state apparatus or ASN should be no later than two years after the revised KPK Law was enacted.

After the rulings of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court were issued, the employees pinned their hopes on the President to take over the process as recommended by Komnas HAM (the National Commission on Human Rights). However, Fadjroel stopped short of responding further when asked about the President's stance on the Komnas HAM's recommendation.

Other than Komnas HAM, the Indonesian Ombudsman would also submit recommendations regarding the issue to President Jokowi. Previously, the Ombudsman found maladministration, procedural irregularities, and abuse of authority in the implementation of TWK.
